David Webster and the youth group at Christ Episcopal Church in Needham, Massachusetts, began helping with Pine Street Inn's food program in 1969, at what was then a fledgling homeless shelter for men on Pine Street in Boston's Chinatown. Within a year, the group was asked for additional support at Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Ever resourceful, David approached the Table Talk Pie Company about donating broken or extra pies to Pine Street, which he would pick up on the eve of the holiday. David remembers the wonderful aroma of pumpkin wafting through the family's garage as he and his two young sons delivered and served the pies at the Inn before they began their family's own festivities.
Even after the boys graduated from college and David retired and moved away, "The Pie Man" as he had come to be known, continued to provide for the guests and tenants of Pine Street Inn by making an annual monetary contribution.
This annual commitment of service created lifelong meaning for David and his family. In fact, it meant so much that he decided he never wanted his mission of helping homeless individuals to end.
In order to do this, David designated assets from a retirement plan to sustain his family's tradition of giving in support of Pine Street's work, helping those in need at the holidays and beyond. This gift will serve as a legacy to the commitment of service established by David, his family and by our founder, Paul Sullivan himself.
